Last time I browsed the site it was a friendly place to buy goods, sell goods, or find fabulous sublets in big cities.
My crazylist discovery mission started a few days ago when I came across a story about a Colorado man being sued by his ex-girlfriend for writing horrific things about her on the website – so horrific, he’s looking at a year and a half in the slammer … we’re talking criminal libel charges. As I’m reading this, I’m not caring about the tool who trashes his ex online or wondering what she may have done to deserve it … the only question I have is: Where in the hell would one go to talk trash about an ex on a website that resembles the classifieds I scan every Sunday in the paper? Could this jerk have written it in the form of a bogus ad?? SEEKING SPSLCGD? (single, psycho, slutty, lying, cheating, gold-digger) I’VE GOT JUST THE GIRL FOR YOU! I was so curious, I immediately navigated to the site.
I typed in the url and was greeted with that same ole’ format, no graphics, no color, no annoying ads (which is nice) … just a list of cities and countries – a much longer list than the one I remember in my craigslist heydays. I used the site to find apartments in SF, LA, and NY for years. I found some great places … also found some dodgy, rat-infested dumps occupied by nut-jobs…nut-jobs who would intentionally not advertise that the unit up for grabs would be a shared space … not until you arrive to check it out do you find out this freakshow is actually looking for a roommate — at which point you bolt for the door and then to the nearest crowded watering hole. Freakshow (shudder). I relived my long list of craigslist nightmares in 2 short mintues, then remember why I am on the site — to find out where a freak like Criminal Libel Colorado Man could write malicious things about his ex girl.
It didn’t take long for me to pick up on all of the changes that at first glance blurred into that same ole’ format. Rants and Raves. Atheist Discussion Forums. Basket Weaving Lessons. Whoah.
What happened to craigslist?? No seriously … what happened?? Craigslist has become an all-out circus act, complete with midget strippers for hire and casual encounters with a juggling contortionist who will teach you how to play the flute. Yikes. It’s no wonder the site has new features like the “Your Safety” section and constant pop-ups where the user must agree to Terms of Use.
Turns out Colorado man wrote the nasty stuff about the ex in the Rants and Raves pages. When asked by police why he published false claims about child abuse and welfare fraud against his ex-girlfriend he said, “I was just venting.” Freakshow.
